A clothing size chart helps you guess quickly whether you wear S, M or L, but it is only a starting point. Every shop cuts to its own pattern, so the same person can be an M at one shop and an L at another. This guide gives a reference chart by height and weight, shows you how to measure yourself and explains how to read each shop's own chart so you return less.
Reference size chart by height and weight
The chart below is a common reference found on Vietnamese fashion sites (as compiled by Mytour). The ranges overlap, so use it to narrow things down and then check your real measurements. Note that Vietnamese sizing generally runs smaller than US or European sizing.
| Size | Men: height, weight | Women: height, weight |
|---|---|---|
| S | 160–165 cm, 55–60 kg | 148–153 cm, 38–43 kg |
| M | 164–169 cm, 60–65 kg | 153–155 cm, 43–46 kg |
| L | 170–174 cm, 66–70 kg | 153–158 cm, 46–53 kg |
| XL | 174–176 cm, 70–76 kg | 155–162 cm, 53–57 kg |
If you fall between two sizes, go up for oversized tees, jackets and loungewear, and go down for fitted pieces such as bodycon dresses or stretch jeans.
How to measure yourself
All you need is a soft tape measure and three minutes. Stand straight, breathe normally and do not pull the tape too tight.
- Bust or chest: around the fullest part, keeping the tape level with the floor.
- Waist: around the narrowest part of your torso, usually a little above the navel.
- Hips: around the widest part of your seat.
- Inseam: from the crotch to the ankle, useful for jeans and wide-leg trousers.
- Shoulder width: across your back from one shoulder point to the other, useful for jackets and shirts.
Save the numbers in a note on your phone so you can check them every time you shop online.
Reading a shop's chart: trust numbers, not letters
Most product pages include the shop's own size chart. Pay attention to:
- Body measurements or garment measurements: some shops list the body the size fits, others list the garment laid flat. For a flat measurement, double the width to get the circumference, which should be a few centimetres larger than your chest for a comfortable fit.
- The cut: an oversized tee is already cut loose, so you do not need to size up.
- The fabric: fabric with spandex is comfortable even when snug; rigid denim and chino need more room.
- Reviews with photos: buyers often note their height, weight and the size they chose. Find someone close to your measurements.
Sizing tips by garment
| Garment | Key measurements | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirt | Chest, length | Buy your size in oversized cuts; consider sizing up for fitted styles |
| Jeans | Waist, hips, inseam | Allow a little extra at the waist for non-stretch denim |
| Dresses | Bust, waist, length | Compare the length with your height to see where the hem will fall |
| Jackets | Shoulders, sleeve length | Size up if you often wear a hoodie underneath |
A note for international shoppers
If you usually shop in the US or Europe, expect to size up when buying from Vietnamese shops, often by one size and sometimes by two. The safest approach is to ignore the letter entirely and compare your measurements in centimetres with the shop's chart. Many sellers will also answer a quick chat message if you send your height and weight.
If it does not fit
Try it on as soon as it arrives and keep the tags and packaging. Read the shop's return policy before ordering so you know whether size exchanges are accepted and how long you have. Filming the unboxing makes a complaint easier if the wrong item arrives.
Once you know your size, start with the pieces you wear most: T-shirts or jeans. Not sure what to buy for your next plan? Try the outfit finder.
